We have two sections of second grade with an average of 23 students in each class.
For
guided reading we use flexible grouping to meet the needs of each
student. Mr. Carlson, our ELL teacher, works closely with us for
reading, to reduce group size. We use leveled readers and
multiple copies of chapter books as resources for our Balanced Literacy
approach to teaching reading. Weekly spelling lists utilize high frequency words and phonics patterns. Basic grammar skills are introduced.
Grade
2 uses Everyday Math and we supplement this math program with
multi-step problem solving work as well as timed fact tests.
In
Writer's Workshop we focus on personal narratives, basic research
projects utilizing the IIM Research Method, procedural writing
and poetry composition.
Our science units are Plants and Seeds, Insects, Dinosaur Research, Nutrition and also Solids and Liquids.
Our Social Studies units focus is on maps, basic geography, government and communities.
As
part of our Museum Process, second graders will present a fall exhibit
on Plants and Seeds. The spring exhibit focuses on Procedural
Writing and Demonstration Speeches.
Music, Computer and Physical Education are taught by specialists.
